Zusammenfassung

I will remember Olli's point of view of living in the West after the Berlin Wall fell. Originally, I thought that when people moved west they would love it and stay there. However, Olli made it clear that not everyone achieves his or her dreams in the west. It helped me to better understand die Wende because it showed the struggles that people still had after the wall fell. Yes, people had more freedom, but this new freedom did not always make them better people. This was shown through Biene: when she moved to the west, she became a different person. Biene conformed to fit in with the new society and disregarded all that she had known before. The fall of the wall changed people. The theme of new found freedom, as well as adjusting to the unknown, facing hardships, such as the mother's loss of her store, and persistance are all themes that came up in the book. I learned that the fall of the wall was beneficial to many, but made some lives more difficult.
